Nous savons tous que le Grand Ole Opry ne voulait rien avoir à faire avec le rock'n' roll, alors que le Louisiana Hayride a donné une exposition nationale à Elvis Presley, Johnny Horton, et d'autres. Eh bien, le Hayride n'était pas seul. Le Big D'D'Jamboree à Dallas a commencé avec la musique country texane, mais a embrassé la nouvelle musique, donnant une pause très importante à Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent et bien d'autres. Au cours d'une course de près de deux décennies qui a commencé au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'extravaganza du samedi soir a rempli le Sportatorium, une arène de lutte en métal dans un quartier miteux au sud du centre-ville.

Diffusé localement sur KRLD et à l'échelle nationale à la radio de CBS, le Jamboree était un échantillon exubérant de la musique country et rock'n' roll la plus dynamique de l'époque, mettant en vedette tous les chanteurs talentueux mais largement oubliés tels que Riley Crabtree, Orville Couch et Helen Hall, ainsi que des personnalités nationales, dont Johnny Cash, Sonny James, Hank Locklin, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Wanda Jackson et Gene Vincent. Ronnie Dawson a fait ses débuts au Jamboree, des années avant que les fans d'outre-mer ne relancent sa carrière. Charline Arthur, "une Janis Joplin avant l'heure", a sauté d'amplificateurs et s'est fait entendre de la scène de lutte de l'arène avant de s'évanouir dans une tragique obscurité.

Cette incroyable collection a vu le jour au milieu des années 1990 lorsque David Dennard de Dallas, inspiré par la réémergence de Dawson, s'est mis en quête d'enregistrements du spectacle historique. Tous ceux à qui il a parlé ont dit qu'aucun enregistrement de ce genre n'avait été fait, mais Dennard a trouvé des disques faits pour être diffusés au personnel de service américain. 

Il en a publié sur son label Dragon Street, mais une collection plus complète était nécessaire, et c'est tout : huit CD, près de 300 titres, la plupart en direct du spectacle, ainsi que des enregistrements en studio en bonus. Les écrivains Kevin Coffey, Stanley Oberst, Jay Brakefield et Alan Govenar, en collaboration avec Dennard, ont produit le livre d'accompagnement de 168 pages riche en informations sur l'époque, les artistes et les chansons.

Le label texan D-Records, par exemple, passe sur 24 CDs d'un label ethno-folklorique à un label hardcore hoxnky-tonk smithy et à la maison du très jeune George Strait.

Ensuite, il y a l'indispensable gamme Sun et d'autres grandes boîtes.

Die Qualität der Live-Aufnahmen ist unglaublich gut, wenn man bedenkt, wie alt sie sind und dass sie nur auf diesen alten überdimensionierten Vinylplatten in der Bibliothek überlebt hatten.
