En cette occasion glaciale, un petit avion transportant Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens et The Big Bopper s'est écrasé dans un champ gelé de l'Iowa, tuant les trois lumières rock and roll en tournée et leur pilote. Le disque hommage posthume de Bear Family à la tragédie réunit quelques-uns de leurs plus grands enregistrements sur cette collection unique en son genre, ainsi que des extraits clés des participants survivants de la tournée - Dion and the Belmonts, Frankie Sardo, Waylon Jennings et même Debbie Stevens, dont la reprise de If You Can't Rock Me est un classique inédit.

Il y a aussi une série de chansons d'hommage au triumvirat déchu d'Eddie Cochran, Ray Campi, Benny Barnes et Hershel Almond, ainsi que des extraits d'émissions de radio d'époque qui relaient les nouvelles dévastatrices. Le rock and roll ne serait plus jamais le même - il avait perdu à jamais son innocence - mais la musique séminale que Buddy, Ritchie et le Bopper nous ont donnée ne vieillira jamais.

plays like an audio documentary

Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, the Big Bopper, and Roger Peterson went beyond music and became history. To this day fans still study the minute details of the circumstances surrounding the crash of their airplane. This CD offers examples of the songs they played on that 1959 tour interspersed with radio news about the crash. Presented in this manner, it plays like an audio documentary. A really well produced album.

Ganz erstklassige CD. Man fühlt sich in dass Jahr 1959 zurückversetzt und fragt sich, was aus diesen tollen Künstlern in der Zukunft noch geworden wäre. Aber leider schlug das Schicksal unbarmherzig zu. Uns bleibt nur die Erinnerung, und dabei hilft diese tolle neue CD sehr.

A wonderful collection of memories from the sad occasion.

This is a momentous collection of songs and news reports. It is meaningful to any fan of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper and the the lesser known artists involved. This collection includes the most important songs from the catalog of each. The liner note booklet is excellent. The only problem is that some songs in the middle section of the disk are listed out of order.

Titel: BCD17585 The Great Tragedy - Winter Dance Party 1959 (CD).
Beschreibung: Im Januar 1959 gingen Buddy Holly mit Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper und Dion & The Belmonts auf große Tournee. Normalerweise erfolgte dabei der Transport per Bus. Doch gerade im Winter waren die Straßen oft verschneit und die Terminpläne so eng, dass der eine oder andere Künstler schon mal auf ein Flufzeug umstieg, um sich nicht gar so abhetzen zu müssen. Das tat Buddy Holly am 2. Februar 1959. Er chartete eine kleine Maschine und Ritchie Valens und The Big Bopper schlossen sich ihm an. Doch als das Flugzeug am nächsten Tag frühmorgens bei dichtem Schneetreiben und klirrender Kälte abhob, kam es nicht weit. Die Maschine besaß eine technische Neuerung, einen „künstlichen Horizont“ mit dem der unerfahrene Pilot offensichtlich nicht umgehen konnte. In der weißen, noch halbdunklen Landschaft verwechselte er augenscheinlich oben und unten, und die Machine bohrte sich kurz nach dem Start fast senkrecht in den Boden. Alle Insassen kamen ums Leben. Auf diese tragische Weise endete am 3. Februar 1959 die Karriere von drei der vielversprechendsten amerikanischen Künster der 1950er Jahre. Bear Family Records hat zum 60sten Gedenktag an diese große Tragödie die hier in Rede stehende CD herausgebracht. Auf 40 Titeln sind nicht nur die größten und bekanntesten Hits von Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens und The Big Bopper in hervorragender Klangqualität zu hören, sondern auch zahlreiche verbale Zeitdukumente zu dem tragischen Unglück am 3. Februar 1959. Nicht zu vergessen das ausführliche Booklet, welches der CD beigefügt ist. Rundum 5 Sterne sind für diese CD absolut angebracht.

AND THE SHOW MUST GO ON Bear Family Records (CD) *** After Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper and pilot Roger Peterson died that fateful morning of February 3, 1959, "The Winter Dance Party" soldiered on for another 10 straight days with Dion & The Belmonts, Frankie Sardo Sc The Crickets, Frankie Avalon, Jimmy Clanton, Fabian, Robert Veline & His Shadows and Bill Par-sons. Holly had fired The Crickets in '58. His new band consisted of bassist Waylon Jennings, guitarist Tommy Allsup and drummer Carl Bunch. Veline found fame later as Bobby Vee. This second volume of music from the aforementioned continues with the aftermath of the event with 34 tracks in just under 80 minutes.

Press Archives - The Great Tragedy - Winter Dance Party 1959 - Penthouse „That'll be the day, when I die ..." Buddy Holly ahnte bei seinem letzten Auftritt am 2. Februar 1959 noch nicht, wie nah dieser Tag war. Allerdings war die chao-tisch geplante „Winter Dance Party"-Tour bisher die Hölle gewesen, unterwegs in klapprigen Bussen kreuz und quer durch drei eisige Bundesstaaten. Um bequemer zum nächsten Gig zu kommen, bestieg Buddy in den frühen Morgenstunden des 3. Februar mit Ritchie Valens und The Big Bopper ein Kleinflugzeug. Ihr tödlicher Absturz gilt in der Rock'n'Roll-Geschichte als „the day the music died". Die Compilation „The Great Tragedy" erinnert mit den Songs der Beteiligten, Interviews und Nachrichtenberichten von damals an ihre letzte, schicksalhafte Tour.
