In June 1993 Richard Dobson and his State of the Heart Band - Mark Sergio Webb and Susie Monick - recorded a live CD at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studios near Austin. Only a few copies of the album called'Mankind' were produced, and soon afterwards the CD album disappeared into obscurity. After more than twenty years, Richard and producer Harold Eggers approached Bear Family to re-release this album. Richard added a few more bonus pieces.

Richard plays a 1970 D-18 Martin, the original'Piece of Wood & Steel'.

Multi-instrumentalist Susie Monick, founding member of the Buffalo Gals, the first female bluegrass band ever, plays a 1950 Gibson RB-250 Mastertone banjo, a Castagnari button accordion and a 1912 mandolin, a Gibson A-model.

Sergio Webb once belonged to Pinto Bennett's Famous Motel Cowboys. He plays a Gibson J-50 with a special B-Bender from the fifties. He plays a telecaster on the bonus pieces.
