En 1956, Sanford Clark a lancé avec The Fool l'un des plus grands hits de la jeune histoire du rock 'n' roll.
Bear Family Records® consacre un album CD à l'un des rockeurs les plus célèbres de son époque, dans le cadre de notre prestigieuse série 'Rocks'.
The Fool a permis à Sanford Clark de signer un contrat avec Dot Records et d'enregistrer par la suite - et notamment pour Ramco et Warner - une multitude de chansons captivantes et émouvantes.
On y trouve Usta Be My Baby, A Cheat, Ooo Baby, Love Charms, Lou Be Doo ainsi que le Cross-Eyed Alley Cat, inédit à l'époque.
En bonus: la version de Houston de Lee Hazlewood réalisée en 1965 avant celle de Dean Martin, ainsi que son réenregistrement de The Fool en 1966 et celui de It's Nothing To Me en 1967.
De grandes productions sous la direction de Lee Hazlewood, soigneusement remasterisées et accompagnées d'un livret illustré de 36 pages avec bio, photos et discographie.

À part Elvis, Carl et Gene Vincent, peu de rockabillies pouvaient se targuer d'un véritable succès national pendant la période faste du genre au milieu des années 50, mais Sanford Clark le pouvait. Sa voix discrète sur The Fool, fournie par Lee Hazlewood, le producteur de Clark basé à Phoenix, en Arizona, a donné à cette complainte impassible l'ambiance qu'elle nécessitait, la guitare solo foudroyante d'Al Casey ajoutant son côté rockabilly hargneux.

Une fois que Dot Records a récupéré le master et son flip Elvis-like Lonesome For A Letter pour la consommation nationale et qu'il a fait un tabac en 1956, Sanford s'est retrouvé une star soudaine, tournant avec Perkins et Vincent et produisant d'autres produits rock pour Dot.

The Fool a mis Lee sur la carte en tant que producteur, bien avant qu'il ne soit le maître d'œuvre de l'ascension de Duane Eddy. L'album ‘Sanford Clark Rocks’ de Bear Family passe en revue le meilleur de la production Dot de Sanford: Usta Be My Baby, A Cheat (à la fois la version originale Dot et la version overdub à la caisse claire), Ooo Baby, Love Charms, Lou Be Doo, un inédit à l'époque, Cross-Eyed Alley Cat.

Il y a aussi un grand nombre de raretés: des singles uniques de 1961 pour les labels Project et Trey, trois faces pour Warner Bros. incluant sa lecture originale de 1965 de Houston de Hazlewood avant Dean Martin, et quatre titres plus tard dans la décennie, notamment son remake de The Fool par Ramco en 1966 et une interprétation en 1967 de la violente It's Nothing To Me écrite avec désinvolture par Leon Payne.

Sanford a toujours fait en sorte que tout cela semble désarmant de facilité et de décontraction, Hazlewood faisant le reste derrière le tableau.

Sanford Clark was one of the coolest early figures in rock and roll!

Sanford Clark was one of the coolest early figures in rock and roll – never as big as Elvis and some other contemporaries, but working at the start with great help from Lee Hazlewood – who really brings a lot to the spirit of these recordings! In some ways, Sanford was an early foil for the sorts of themes that Lee would later bring to his own solo recordings – and he's also got plenty of the echo and twangy guitar on his cuts, of the sort that Hazlewood was also recording with Duane Eddy! Yet this package also offers a lot more than just the basic Sanford Clark sound as well – as it includes some small label tracks next to his Dot Records material, and some cool later cuts as well – all packaged with the care and detailed notes we love from Bear Family!

This is a long-awaited release that we recommend!

Now it's the turn of Sanford Clark to get his Bear Family package. In 1956, he gets one of the biggest hits of the year with "The Fool". The song was first recorded for the local MCA label, but Dot saw the opportunity and picked up the song for distribution in the US and worldwide, Dot tied Sanford to the label and all tracks are produced by the duo Lee Hazlewood and Lester Sill. His second and final chart entry came the same year with "A Cheat" which reached a modest 74th position. His musicians at this time include Al Casey on guitar, Corky Casey (acoustic guitar) and bassist Jimmy Wilcox. The first recordings are made at Audio Records Studio in Phoenix, Arizona. From February 1957 they use Radio Recorders in Hollywood. In the 1960s they return to Phoenix. When "The Fool" hits, Sanford goes on tour with Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Knox and Jimmy Bowen to name a few. In 1958 he leaves Dot and joins Jamie to go on to Project (1961), Trey (1961), Warner Brothers (1964-65) and Ramco (1966-97), LHI (1967-69) and Desert Sun (1982). For Ramco he made a re-recording of "The Fool" which prompted Dot to reissue his original single.
