EDDIE BOND n'a jamais vraiment pris le placage de la maison de disques. Assis dans son bureau de Memphis, ou dans un pub anglais, il ressemble encore à un homme de loi du Sud qui te battrait pour avoir déposé un papier d'emballage de bonbon. Eddie James Bond a appris le rock à Memphis où il est né le 1er juillet 1933. Il a grandi avec la musique country et a acquis un goût pour Roy Acuff et Ernest Tubb. Après un passage dans la Marine, il a formé son premier groupe, les Stompers, au début des années 50 en choisissant Reggie Young (guitare principale), John Hughey (guitare en acier) et un pianiste aveugle, Jimmy Smith. Ils ont été rejetés par Sam Phillips qui pensait que la voix de Bond manquait de caractère.
En 1955 Bond a fait un couple de disques de pays pour Ekko et il est probable que ceux-ci l'ont porté à l'attention de D.Kilpatrick qui l'a signé à Mercure en 1956. Nous avons choisi Rockin' Daddy (une reprise du classique de Sonny Fisher's Starday), Flip Flop Mama (un original de Bond), Boppin' Bonnie (écrit par les associés de Charlie Feathers), Jody Chastain et Jerry Huffman), et Slip, Slip, Slip, Slip, Slippin' In de la plume de Bob Belyeu qui a écrit Honey Stop pour Faron Young et Lonesome Train pour Johnny T. Talley. La chanson de Belyeu a également été enregistrée par Lou Millet, un chanteur de C&W devenu rockabilly dont la version féroce sur le label Republic a été évaluée à plus de 1000$. Les quatre titres de Bond sont bénis par le jeu de guitare rockabilly de Reggie Young qui rivalise avec l'acier de John Hughey sur Rockin' Daddy, contribue deux breaks grésillants aux autres titres et compense largement la nature sans caractère de la voix de Bond.
Scotty Moore a fait référence aux prouesses de Young dans une interview avec Trevor Cajiao : "Reggie jouait vraiment bien et puis il est entré dans l'armée, et quand il est sorti....Lord ! Il était en train de s'ébouillanter ! J'ai eu beaucoup de temps pour m'entraîner, je pense". Sam Phillips refusa de nouveau Bond en 1958, mais finit par céder. La carrière de Bond a pris d'autres tournants surprenants. En 1973, il a consacré un album à Buford Pusser, le robuste symbole de l'application de la loi du Tennessee, dont l'histoire déchirante a été racontée dans le film " Walking Tall ". Finalement, Bond est devenu l'un des paillettes rockabilly, feted en Grande-Bretagne et le reste de l'Europe. Ses enregistrements Ekko, Mercury et Sun/Phillips International ont été rassemblés sur'Rockin' Daddy' (Bear Family BCD 15708).

Super sound quality, beautiful images of the original labels and proper researched information about the artists and their recording sessions
I always thought that Eddie Bond is great, but I was never able to buy everything and all. That's why I‘d always bought any other record instead for 40 years. Shame on me. Sure, I’d heard most of Eddie‘s titles and I have one or the other track on a compilation. I always thought, "I'm going to buy Eddie Bond tomorrow." Finally here‘s tomorrow and I have taken this great 45rpm 10" record from Bear Family as a starter to Eddie Bond. I can only say, it’s very, very awesome. Only killers – no fillers! I would say thematically, this disc contains the songs that are the most popular with the Rockabilly community – and there are not only tracks from the 50s – plus some other very interesting and important titles by Eddie Bond.
I’m always impressed by the high-quality presentation of Bear Family products. A large booklet and a great photo are included with this record. There is super sound quality, beautiful images of the original labels and proper researched information about the artists and their recording sessions – as usual with Bear Family.

A small package, but one that's overflowing with gems – given that the 10" album includes 14 titles, and the bonus CD features a total of 25 numbers in all – a great illustration of these early years from Memphis rocker Eddie Bond! Bond's maybe best known for his work on Sun Records, but he also recorded for other small labels too – and this set brings together a good range of those cuts in a nicely short space – including a few surprises from the late 60s that show that the Memphis rockabilly of Bond is alive and well!

This beautiful package contains a 14-track 10" vinyl LP, a CD and a 12-page booklet with notes by Memphis specialist, Martin Hawkins.
Concentrating on the 10inch we get one song from Eddie's first label, Ekko, six of his rockabilly monsters from Mercury, two from his originally unissued 1958 Sun sessions, and five tracks from local Memphis labels in the '60s. The songs themselves need no intro-duction here, suffice to say they are the very zenith of rockabilly music - the Mercury recordings, in particular, holding their own against anyone else's best.
I was particularly pleased to see the great honky-tonker 'Runnin' Drunk' included and although it was cut at Sam's Madison Avenue studio as late as '68, it slots in here perfectly -it's all Memphis music after all. I also loved hearing 'Here Comes That Train'. I've heard it hundreds of times on CD but the acoustic guitar and dobro sound so grand on this vinyl, sitting beautifully between `Rockin' Daddy' and `Boppin' Bonnie'. The Bond and Jack Clement song, 'Broke My Guitar' (Boo Bop Da Caa Caa)', and the Quinton Claunch and William Cantrell number, This Old Heart Of Mine, come from '58 and although neither saw release at the time, they have all the markings of Sun Records.
1969's Nashville recording, 'Juke Joint Johnny', maybe shows yh its vintage and doesn't sit so wells E in the collection, but it still rocks. The CD contains a further eleven tracks by other artists including Lattie Moore, Red Sovine, Hank Penny, Lou Millet, Ray Charles, Elvis and two vicious interpretations of •Rockin' Daddy' by Sonny Fisher. The shiny includes two alternatives by Eddie himself; a 1975 version of `Rockin' Daddy', and his 1959 Stompertime version of 'Boo Bop Da Caa Caa'. The great Memphis cat Eddie Bond was probably due a vinyl update, making this a fantastic release
