Great Drums at Sun includes some breath-taking playing: from legends like WS Holland, Billy Weir and Jimmy Van Eaton to one-of-a-kinds like Joey Riesenberg, whose story has never been told before. Other drummers we selected - men like Bobby Crafford, Johnny Bernero and Houston Stokes - worked in near obscurity, but their brilliant playing illuminated recordings by better known vocalists. Try to imagine Whole Lotta Shakin’ or Ubangi Stomp without the drums and you’ll see what we mean. Sam Phillips, the founder and guiding hand of Sun Records, knew how to listen and he knew how important the musicians were. He went so far as to create a “house band” during Sun’s Golden Era - a group of wonderful instrumentalists he would routinely call upon to play at vocalists’ recording sessions. We’ll listen to these records like Sam Phillips did, to get a deeper appreciation of the music that came out of the Sun studio. The CD comes with track-by-track listening notes by musicians and Sun historians, Hank Davis and Scott Parker.

In two collections of recordings from the legendary Sun label in Memphis ('Great Guitars at Sun' and 'Great Drums at Sun') we change the usual focus. Now the spotlight is off the singers and firmly on the guitarists and drummers who provided so much of what was great about our favorite Sun Records. There are thousands of Sun reissue albums out there but none before has put the musicians at the center of attention. That change is long overdue.

Les éditions Sun Records par Bear Family Records
Sun Records Au printemps 1952, Sam Phillips a risqué de fonder sa propre maison de disques - Sun Records. Il a été producteur indépendant pendant plusieurs années et a enregistré le plus grand succès R&B de 1951, Rocket 88 de Jackie Brenston.

Sam Phillips savait donc qu'il avait choisi le bon emploi. Mais est-ce que ça marcherait avec Sun Records, alors que beaucoup de labels indépendants ont dû fermer rapidement ? Ça n'avait pas l'air bon au début non plus. Après seulement deux sorties sur Sun Records, il y avait déjà une pause d'un an.

Mais peu à peu, les hits se sont mis en place : Avec des enregistrements de Rufus Thomas, les Prisonnaires, Junior Parker et bien sûr Elvis Presley. Puis il n'y a pas eu d'arrêt. Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty, Carl Mann, Billy Riley, Warren Smith et bien d'autres se sont joints à nous. Ils ont changé en permanence le monde de la musique pop.

si vous ne faites pas quelque chose de différent, vous ne faites rien du tout.
Après la vente du label Sun Records en 1969, il y a eu d'innombrables rééditions du matériel. Mais seule Bear Family a toujours déménagé à un niveau de qualité élevé. Seules ces nouvelles éditions de Sun Records sont recommandées. Parce que ces CD et coffrets CD offrent le meilleur son, les meilleures photos, les meilleurs textes d'accompagnement et la meilleure présentation !
