El Camino a été produit par Danger Mouse et The Black Keys et enregistré au printemps 2011 à Nashville, alors nouvelle ville natale du groupe. The Black Keys ont remporté trois prix pour El Camino lors de la 55e cérémonie annuelle des GRAMMY Awards - Meilleure performance rock, Meilleure chanson rock et Meilleur album rock - parmi d'autres récompenses mondiales. En Grande-Bretagne, le groupe a été nominé pour un BRIT Award (meilleur groupe international) et un NME Award (meilleur groupe international). La semaine de la sortie, le groupe a participé au Saturday Night Live, au Colbert Report et au Late Show with David Letterman, et plus tard dans l'année, il a donné son premier concert au Madison Square Garden.
