UNPRECEDENTED U.K. PSYCHEDELIC-PROGRESSIVE-JAZZ-ROCK!

The aptly titled Volume Two introduced a retooled Soft Machine lineup, with Wyatt and Ratledge joined by bassist Hugh Hopper, an old Canterbury friend who had guested on the first album. The sophomore disc finds the threesome moving towards a more explicitly jazz-influenced sound, with an increased emphasis on instrumental material. The album is bookended by a pair of extended compositions, "Rivmic Melodies" and "Esther's Nose Job," which are broken up into shorter individual tracks bearing whimsically arbitrary titles. That approach was suggested to the band by Frank Zappa, whose Mothers of Invention album Absolutely Free was reportedly an influence on Volume Two.

The first two albums by England's legendary Soft Machine, originally released in 1968 and 1969, remain among the most innovative and influential releases of that musically fertile era. These seminal LPs offered a visionary psychedelic-progressive-jazz-rock mix that helped to make the Soft Machine one of Britain's first significant underground bands, as well as a key force in the birth of both progressive rock and jazz-rock.

This landmark gem has been out of print for decades, but now it is back in a meticulously packaged Sundazed compact disc edition. Mastered from the original analog tapes, this lovingly restored album sounds as powerful and imaginative as ever.

A product of the same fabled Canterbury scene that spawned such beloved cult acts as Caravan and Hatfield and the North, the Soft Machine was the rare art-rock combo whose members possessed the instrumental skills to execute their ambitious musical ideas, as well as a playful sense of humor that balanced the band's complex compositions and adventurous improvisations. By the time they began making albums, the Soft Machine was already a sensation in the budding U.K. rock underground, thanks to their now-legendary performances at such fabled London clubs as the UFO, the Speakeasy and Middle Earth, where they shared stages with the likes of Pink Floyd and Tomorrow.

Soft Machine a évolué au travers de différents types de jazz-orienté vers le jazz- per-sonnel. Le groupe tire son nom du roman de William Bur-roughs d'après le guitariste australien Daevid Allen, qui a apporté l'influence de Terry Riley et des bandes-loops à la formation Kentish de Kevin Ayers (basse, chant), Mike Ratledge (clavier, né en 1943) et Robert Wyatt (batterie, chant).

Ils se produisent régulièrement face au Pink Floyd à Londres, participent à quelques sessions d'enregistrement avortées en 1967, et présentent leur musique (improvisation libre sur une base rock, plus voix) en France avec grand succès. Allen s'est vu refuser l'entrée en Grande-Bretagne à cause de problèmes de visa et de passeport, et c'est en trio que le groupe a entrepris une pénible tournée américaine avec Jimi Hendrix en 1968 ; ils se sont séparés après avoir enregistré leur premier album pour Probe à New York. Après le succès de l'album, ils se reforment avec Hugh Hopper (né en 1945, un sympathique sideman de l'époque où ils s'appelaient les Wilde Flowers) pour remplacer Ayers à la basse. D'autres albums (sur CBS /Columbia) ont suivi, avec les chansons de Wyatt et les expériences angulaires de Ratledge sur les signatures temporelles.

Quatre cors de jazz ont été ajoutés pour une tournée française et le saxophoniste Elton Dean est resté avec eux ; leur son maintenant fortement influencé par le jazz, avec moins de voix Wyatt, représentait le rock aux London classical music Proms en 1970, et Wyatt est parti pour former Matching Mole en septembre 1971, peu après une apparition au New-port Jazz Festival. La saveur jazz est restée, avec Phil Howard puis John Marshall à la batterie, Roy Babbington remplaçant Hopper, et Karl Jenkins (claviers, hautbois et saxophone baryton) remplaçant Dean ; sur l'album Six, les structures de riffs jazz et les morceaux de Rileyesque se côtoient. Plus récemment, le guitariste de jazz et violoniste Alan Holdsworth a injecté un sentiment un peu plus urgent dans leur rock improvisé brillamment joué et soigneusement structuré, comme sur leur album Harvest 1975.
