Howlin' Wolf: Moanin' in the Moonlight (LP, 180g Vinyl)
Le premier album de Wolf - curieusement sorti après son deuxième album - contient tous ses premiers succès (« How Many More Years », « Moanin' at Midnight", "Smokestack Lightning", "Forty Four", "Evil » et "I Asked for Water [She Gave Me Gasoline]") et constitue une collection assez solide en soi.
« Moanin' In The Moonlight » est l'album suivant (qui est toujours appelé "the rocking chair album » en raison de la couverture distinctive de Don Bronstein), sur lequel le duo tout aussi solide de Willie Dixon et Wolf produit un classique du Chicago blues ("Spoonful", "The Red Rooster", "Back Door Man", "Wang Dang Doodle") après l'autre. Sur ces merveilleuses faces, on peut aussi clairement entendre le guitariste principal Hubert Sumlin devenir une légende du picking blues.
Howlin' Wolf était la force première de la musique blues. C'était une figure imposante, dotée d'une voix tonitruante et d'une force physique énorme. Comme son ami et rival Muddy Waters, Wolf a transformé le country blues archaïque du Mississippi en blues urbain électrique dans sa ville d'adoption, Chicago. Cet album présente son premier album exceptionnel pour Chess Records, « Moanin' in the Moonlight » (1959) - l'une des pierres angulaires du genre à jamais.

Come Back Home
The first two bars set the tone for the entire record. That very countryish guitar figure will work its way through the chord changes of this 12-bar blues. It's the glue that holds this performance together.
If you listen closely, you'll recognize the tone on that guitar (a pleasant blend of acoustic and ampli- fied) from Track 12. It's blues combo man Willie Johnson, who made his greatest mark as Howlin' Wolf's lead guitar player. And the vocalist here is none other than Chester Burnett, a/k/a The Howlin' Wolf.
The track is called Come Back Home, a title that could have been replaced by half a dozen other phrases from the song. This is little more than a string of vocal blues clichés, made distinctive by the Wolf's vocal stylings (he could have recited the Helena phone directory and gathered a crowd) and the repetitive force of John- son's guitar figure. The truth is, the con- tinuity of that figure is the only thing to suggest this performance is a "song" and not merely a blues jam.
