Patty Loveless begann schon in jungen Jahren mit dem Schreiben von Songs. Zusammen mit ihrem Bruder ging sie nach Nashville und wurde von Porter Wagoner und Dolly Parton an die Wilburn Brothers weitergereicht, mit deren Show sie von 1973 bis 1975 unterwegs war. Dann schloss sie ihr Studium ab und trat in lokalen Clubs auf. 1985 kam sie wieder nach Nashville und unterschrieb einen Plattenvertrag bei MCA.
