In ihrer Heimatstadt Nashville wuchs sie mit Country- und Western- Music auf, und diese Musik bestimmt auch heute noch ihre Lieder. Ihre Karriere begann als Studiosängerin für Joe Cokker, Leon Russell, Dave Mason, Graham Nash und Eric Clapton. 1971 nahm sie ihre erste LP auf - „Rita Coolidge'. 1973 lernte sie Kris Kristofferson kennen.
