Zwei Meilensteine zwischen Soul, Blues und Westcoast-Eleganz

Bobby Bland, oft auch als „Lion of the Blues“ bezeichnet, gehört zu den ganz Großen des Soul und modernen Blues. In den 1960er-Jahren feierte er unter dem Dach von Duke Records mit seiner markanten Mischung aus Blues, Gospel, Soul und dezentem Pop-Appeal eine beispiellose Hitserie. Seine Stimme – samtweich, doch durchdringend, getragen von einem einzigartigen „Squall“, einem rauen, kehlig-emotionalen Ausruf – wurde zum Markenzeichen.

Der Übergang zur Westküste: Neue Klangwelten

Mit dem Verkauf von Duke an ABC Records Anfang der 1970er und dem Wechsel auf das Dunhill-Label verlagerte sich Blands Karriere geografisch und stilistisch nach Kalifornien. In Zusammenarbeit mit Produzent Steve Barri entstanden zwei Alben, die heute als Klassiker gelten:

„His California Album“ (1973)
„Dreamer“ (1974)

Beide LPs markieren den Beginn einer neuen Ära in Blands Schaffen: moderner produziert, von Westcoast-Studiomusikern getragen und doch durch und durch Bobby Bland – emotional, authentisch und stilvoll.

„His California Album“ – Soul mit urbanem Flair

Auf „His California Album“ trifft Bobby Bland auf eine hochklassige Riege von Studiomusikern aus dem Los Angeles-Umfeld. Songs wie „This Time I’m Gone For Good“ zeigen ihn in Bestform: verletzlich, aber kraftvoll. Der Sound ist eleganter produziert als seine früheren Werke – eine bewusste Weiterentwicklung, ohne die Seele des Blues zu verlieren.

„Dreamer“ – R&B mit Tiefgang

Das Folgealbum „Dreamer“ brachte Bland endgültig zurück in die R&B-Charts, mit großen Songs wie:

„Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City“
„I Wouldn’t Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me)“

Beide Titel gelten heute als absolute Highlights seiner Karriere. Barri setzte erneut auf eine All-Star-Besetzung: Larry Carlton, Dean Parks, Wilton Felder, Michael Omartian u.a. – Musiker, die dem Album eine zeitlose Klangfarbe verleihen. Der warme, orchestrale Soul-Sound bringt Blands Stimme ideal zur Geltung.
