Big Brother and the Holding Company, 1966 in San Francisco gegründet, bestand aus Sam Andrew (geb. 12. August 1941), Gitarre; James Gurly, Gitarre; Pete Albin, Bass; Dave Getz, Schlagzeug; und Janis Joplin, Gesang. Eine Supergroup in der Bay-Region, das einzige Album, das ihnen als Gruppe gerecht wurde, Big Brother and The Holding Company (Mainstream, 1967), war ironischerweise ein Demo-Tape, gegen dessen Veröffentlichung die Gruppe kämpfte.

Aber es zeigte eine Rauheit hinter der offensichtlichen Begeisterung von Joplins Stimme, dass Columbia, als sie die Gruppe 1968 unterzeichneten, nicht bereit war, erneut ein Risiko einzugehen. 1969 waren Big Brother und Janis getrennte Einheiten. Be A Brother (1970), bei dem die Gründungsmitglieder durch Nick Gravenites und David Schallok ergänzt wurden, sahen, wie die Gruppe einen weicheren, wenn auch weniger aufregenden Sound entwickelte.
