"Big Brother & The Holding Company"

Big Brother and the Holding Company, fondée à San Francisco en 1966, comprenait Sam Andrew (né le 12 août 1941), guitariste, James Gurly, guitariste, Pete Albin, bassiste, Dave Getz, batteur et Janis Joplin, chanteur. Un super groupe de la région de Bay, le seul album qui leur a rendu justice en tant que groupe, Big Brother et The Holding Company (Mainstream, 1967), était ironiquement une cassette de démo que le groupe s'est battu contre la sortie.

Mais derrière l'excitation évidente de la voix de Joplin se cache une certaine brutalité : Columbia, lorsqu'ils ont signé le groupe en 1968, n'était pas prêt à prendre de nouveau le risque d'enregistrer. En 1969, Big Brother et Janis étaient des entités séparées. Be A Brother (1970), sur lequel Nick Gravenites et David Schallok sont venus s'ajouter aux membres originaux, a vu le groupe développer un son plus doux, quoique moins excitant.
