Bear Family adore ses compilations'thématiques' et en voici une autre, cette fois-ci avec 29 chansons'météo', en particulier de la fin de l'année qui précède l'hiver. L'introduction du livret est presque une critique en soi : "Bienvenue dans le paysage de l'automne. Nous aimerions que vous puissiez vous évader avec nous dans le monde des feuilles qui tombent, des bois colorés, de la pluie et des orages, de la chaleur de l'été indien, et bien sûr de la mélancolie de l'automne mer-son !
Sur le chemin, nous rencontrerons des ouvriers agricoles, Mozart et des dindes pour célébrer avec nostalgie l'Action de grâce et la période allant de septembre à novembre. Mais ne vous inquiétez pas, Halloween n'est pas inclus !" La référence à la'dinde' est très pertinente, car il y en a plusieurs ici, de Fag Hunter et Don Duke (un enregistrement Embassy !!!!!) à Bobby Vinton et même Mark Wynter !!!!! Puis il y a un tas de choses orchestrales / big band / jazzy - Ferrante & Teicher, Harry James, Bobby Christian, Les Brown etc. - ainsi qu'une grosse cuillerée de pur duvet du début des années 60 de The Tempos, Bobby Darin's Orchestra, The Viscounts, The Flares (pas THE Flares) et ainsi de suite. Une touche de country / bluegrass / western swing, aussi, de Chet Atkins, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs et Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies. Plus une pièce de fantaisie de Red Ingle et des articles pop classe de Etta James, Irma Thomas et Dinah Washington.
Mais c'est un magazine de rock'n'roll, alors y a-t-il du rock'n'roll ici ? Très peu, j'en ai bien peur. Les Coasters sont tout sauf du rock'n'roll avec un morceau de leur plus faible LP ('One By One'), tandis que'Cot-ton Picker' d'Eddie Cochran est loin d'être son meilleur. Il ne reste plus que le Did-dleyesque'Storm War-ning' de Mac Rebennack et le moins convaincant'Turkey Gob-bler' de Nino Tempo, le sauteur de wagons de banlieue. Oh, et les fans de Johnny Bach & The Moonshine Boozers peuvent entendre la version originale de Memphis Minnie de'What's The Matter With The Mill' de 1930 ! C'est une collection très bizarre. Beaucoup trop divers musicalement pour faire flotter mon bateau. Ça c'est sûr.

Bear Family love their 'themed' compilations and here's another one, this time featuring 29 'weather' songs; in partic-ular from the latter part of the year that precedes winter. The booklet's intro-duction is almost a review in itself: "Welcome to the scenery of autumn. We'd like you to escape with us into the world of falling leaves, colourful woods, rain and thunderstorms, the warmth of the Indian sum-mer, and of course the melancholy of the fall sea-son!
On the way we will meet field workers, Mozart and turkeys to celebrate Thanksgiving and the period from September to November in a nostalgic way. But don't worry, Halloween is not included!" The 'turkey' reference is very apt, as there's a bunch of them here, from Fag Hunter and Don Duke (an Embassy recording!!!) to Bobby Vinton and even Mark Wynter!!! Then there's a heap of orchestral / big band / jazzy stuff -Ferrante & Teicher, Harry James, Bobby Christian, Les Brown etc. - as well as a big dollop of pure early '60s fluff from The Tempos, Bobby Darin's Orchestra, The Viscounts, The Flares (not THE Flares) and so forth. A dash of country / bluegrass / western swing, too, from Chet Atkins, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs and Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies. Plus a novelty piece from Red Ingle and classy pop items from Etta James, Irma Thomas and Dinah Washington.
But this is a rock n roll mag, so is there any rock n roll here? Very little, I'm afraid. The Coasters are anything but rock n roll with a track from their weakest LP ('One By One'), while Eddie Cochran's 'Cot-ton Picker' is far from his finest. That leaves Mac Rebennack's Did-dleyesque 'Storm War-ning' and the less con-vincing 'Turkey Gob-bler' by bandwagon jumper Nino Tempo. Oh, and fans of Johnny Bach & The Moonshine Boozers can get to hear Memphis Minnie's orig-inal version of 'What's The Matter With The Mill' from 1930! This is a very weird collection. Way too musically diverse to float my boat. that's for sure.
