VARIOUS ARTISTS THAT'LL FLAT GET IT VOL 33 (Bear Family) From the vaults of Renown Records. 8/10
It's astonishing that over 60 years after they were recorded and the fact the rockabilly and rock n roll from the 1950's has been voraciously collected in Europe pretty much since then that so much quality music is still being discovered and recovered for release on compilations like this. This time it's the Renown label of Durham North Carolina that gets the spotlight.
Almost a third of these tracks are previously unreleased the rest lifted from super-rare singles spanning 1957 to 1969 though it's often hard to spot the join. The youngest track, Harold Pope's `Stop Walking All Over Me' would have been a real throwback even then with ringing steel guitar, but it's a proper earwig, another standout is The Hi-Lit-ers raucous piano battering 'Dance Me To Death'.
There are 35 tracks in this collection, no filler, complete with rare photos, interviews and information packed into the booklet.

Il est étonnant que plus de 60 ans après leur enregistrement et le fait que le rockabilly et le rock n roll des années 1950 aient été voracement collectés en Europe à peu près depuis lors, on découvre et récupère encore tant de musique de qualité pour la publier sur des compilations comme celle-ci. Cette fois-ci, c'est le label Renown de Durham en Caroline du Nord qui est à l'honneur.
Près d'un tiers de ces titres sont inédits, le reste étant tiré de singles super rares datant de 1957 à 1969, bien qu'il soit souvent difficile de les identifier. Le morceau le plus récent, "Stop Walking All Over Me" d'Harold Pope aurait été un véritable retour en arrière même à l'époque avec sa guitare en acier, mais c'est un vrai pince-oreilles, un autre morceau qui se distingue est le piano rauque des Hi-Lit-ers qui bat "Dance Me To Death".
