De op 14 januari 1929 geboren Billy Walker wist een muzikale carrière uit te bouwen die maar liefst 6 decennia zou overbruggen. Als tiener behoorde hij reeds tot de legendarische Big D. Jamboree in Dallas. Zijn eerste platencontract kreeg hij bij Capitol Records in 1949. Twee jaren later verliet hij echter het label omdat hij onderdak kreeg bij Columbia. Vanaf 1952 maakte hij deel uit van de Louisiana Hayride en nog later werd hij vooral gesmaakt om zijn optredens in de Grand Ole Opry. Op dit album, dat deel uitmaakt van de reeks ‘Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight’, focust Bear Family op de eerste jaren van Walkers carrière, namelijk van 1949 tot 1962. Het blijkt al vlug dat Billy enorm veelzijdig was. De 30 hier gebundelde songs bevatten aanstekelijke Texas honky tonk, knappe shuffles, rockabilly, meeslepende country en veredelde upbeat pop. Imponerend is ook Walkers versie van de Roy Baham compositie ‘Charlie’s Shoes’. Het was trouwens het enige nummer waarmee Billy Walker in 1962 de eerste plaats wegkaapte in de Country Charts.
Billy Walker kwam op 21 mei 2006 tijdens een tournee door een motorongeluk om het leven.
Zijn muzikale veelzijdigheid maakt deze compilatie uiterst genietbaar. De songkeuze, Walkers stem en de voortreffelijke arrangementen maken dat ‘Whirlpool’ enkel hoogtepunten bevat. Verplichte kost voor fans van Amerikaanse rootsmuziek.

Billy Walker, born on 14 January 1929, managed to build a musical career that would span no less than 6 decades. As a teenager he already belonged to the legendary Big D. Jamboree in Dallas. He got his first record deal with Capitol Records in 1949. Two years later, however, he left the label because he was accommodated at Columbia. From 1952 he was part of the Louisiana Hayride and even later he was especially appreciated for his performances in the Grand Ole Opry. On this album, which is part of the series 'Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight', Bear Family focuses on the first years of Walker's career, from 1949 to 1962. It soon turns out that Billy was enormously versatile. The 30 songs bundled here include catchy Texas honky tonk, handsome shuffles, rockabilly, compelling country and ennobled upbeat pop. Also impressive is Walker's version of the Roy Baham composition 'Charlie's Shoes'. By the way, it was the only song with which Billy Walker took first place in the Country Charts in 1962.
Billy Walker was killed in a motorcycle accident on 21 May 2006.
His musical versatility makes this compilation extremely enjoyable. The choice of songs, Walker's voice and the excellent arrangements mean that 'Whirlpool' contains only highlights. A must for fans of American root music.
