Southside Johnny, alias John Lyon, est originaire du New Jersey, tout comme le Boss (Bruce Springsteen), et bien sûr les chemins des deux, ou plutôt des membres du E-Street Band, se sont souvent croisés. Il entretient notamment une amitié de longue date avec Steven Van Zandt, alias Little Steven, qui a également produit les trois premiers albums de Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, très influencés par le rhythm and blues : I Don't Want to Go Home » (1976), “This Time It's for Real” (1977) et “Hearts of Stone” (1978).

Le groupe donne son premier concert en Allemagne en 1977 au « Onkel Pö » de Hambourg. En octobre 1979, ils se sont produits à la 5e édition de la Rockpalast Nacht à la Grugahalle d'Essen avec Mitch Ryder et Nils Lofgren. WDR était sur place pour le Rockpalast et a enregistré l'événement. Le 26 mars 1992, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Dukes ont donné un deuxième concert pour le Rockpalast au Live Music Hall de Cologne. Ce soir-là, Little Steven a fait quatre apparitions sur scène. Ces deux concerts sont désormais disponibles en DVD. Le 6 mars 1992, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Dukes ont donné un deuxième concert pour le Rockpalast au Live Music Hall de Cologne.
