L'allure royale du chanteur de soul Solomon Burke, né à Philadelphie, était si convaincante qu'en 1964, il a été couronné'King of Rock'n' Soul' par Baltimore deejay Rockin' Robin' Robin. "Il avait un spectacle au Royal Theater et un au Howard Theater. Une semaine au Royal, une semaine au Howard ", dit Solomon. "Il dit : "Écoute, je veux te couronner roi !" J'ai dit : "D'accord, roi de quoi ?" Il dit : "Roi du rocher". J'ai dit : "Oh non, on doit avoir de l'âme, parce que je ne suis pas un rocker." Il dit : "D'accord, Roi de l'histoire.

Rock'n' Soul ! Ce serait parfait." Burke porte toujours une couronne et est assis sur un trône sur scène.

L'un des hommes responsables du succès de Burke au début des années 60 sur Atlantic était Bert Berns, dont l'imprimatur de l'écriture a honoré Twist And Shout, Hang On Sloopy et Piece Of My Heart. "Bert Berns était un grand ami de Jerry Wexler, dit Burke. "Bert Berns était un jeune écrivain venu à New York, et personne ne voulait faire ses chansons. Jerry Wexler l'a adopté. Il est devenu comme le fils adoptif de Jerry. Et il était juste là dans le studio. Et Jerry dit : "Écoute, tu dois faire certaines de ces chansons !" Berns est l'auteur du hit Cry To Me de Burke en 1962, co-écrit son top 64 Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye Baby Goodbye), et a partagé le crédit avec Wexler et Burke sur le stomping Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, un autre des faits saillants de Solomon en 1964.

"I had to give them a piece of the writers' before they would accept it to even release the record," claims Burke. "They said, 'This song will never happen. It's too fast. It's redundant. It keeps saying the same thing. Nobody's going to buy this!'"

Not only did Solomon's fans buy that one, they went for his resplendent self-penned ballad The Price, a #57 pop seller. In full Wonder Boy Preacher mode during a sermon intro that finds him name-checking three recent hits, Burke passionately recounts how much his broken love affair has cost him in front of a knife-edged Ray Ellis arrangement (Berns himself was one of three guitarists on the date).

" It was written in the Apollo Theatre," says Solomon. "A lady almost fell out of the balcony there, just screamin' and hollerin' when I wrote that song on stage. I was going through some personal problems in my life with my wife at that time, and I just came on stage and had my band play certain chords. I played the guitar, and they followed me, and I wrote the song. It was very dynamic."
