Archie Bell est né à Houston (Texas) en 1944 et a formé le groupe The Drells au lycée. Au milieu des années 60, le groupe se produit sous le nom d'Archie Bell & The Drells.
À l'âge de 22 ans, Archie Bell est appelé sous les drapeaux, mais avant son départ, son colocataire et collègue des Drells, Billy Butler, entre dans la chambre, allume la radio et commence à danser sur la musique et à montrer les derniers mouvements de danse. Bell se souvient : "Je lui ai demandé : "Qu'est-ce que tu fais ?" Il m'a répondu : "Je fais le Tighten Up". Cela m'a remonté le moral et m'a fait oublier mes problèmes avec l'Oncle Sam. Nous avons donc décidé d'écrire une chanson sur le Tighten Up.

Le disque est bien accueilli et est enregistré par Ahmet Ertegun d'Atlantic Records, trois mois après le séjour de deux ans d'Archie dans l'armée américaine.

Pour capitaliser sur le succès du single, Atlantic veut sortir un album dès que possible, mais le groupe n'a pas assez de titres inédits en boîte pour remplir un album. Heureusement, Archie Bell obtient la permission de retourner aux États-Unis spécialement pour les enregistrements. "J'ai fait deux fois le voyage depuis l'Allemagne avec un laissez-passer de week-end parce que nous n'avions pas beaucoup de matériel", se souvient-il. "J'ai pris l'avion pour New York, j'ai enregistré toute la journée du samedi, j'ai pris l'avion le dimanche et je suis rentré en Allemagne avant l'heure du coucher.
"Tighten Up" se classe en première position du Hot 100 et vaut au groupe un disque d'or.
Mais Archie Bell & The Drells ne sont pas un feu de paille, car les autres succès notables du groupe comprennent "(There's Gonna Be A) Showdown", "Dancing To The Music", "I Can't Stop Dancing" et "Here I Go Again" - tous des succès pour Atlantic Records.
Après avoir travaillé pendant des années avec les légendaires producteurs Gamble & Huff, il était logique de passer à leur label Philadelphia International, où ils ont obtenu d'autres succès tels que "Let's Groove", "Soul City Walking" et "Strategy", pour n'en citer que quelques-uns.
