The Bay Bops were white New York doowoppers. Originally formed in 1954, they were initially known as The Starlighters when they were gigging around Brooklyn. Baritone/bass singer Barney Zarzana was the only original member by the time they renamed themselves The Bay Bops, although lead singer Danny Zipfel was an early replacement member. First tenor George Taylor, Jr. and second tenor Bobby Serrao rounded out the lineup that pooled its money to cut an acappella demo in December of 1957 that they delivered to Coral Records.
Accordionist Milton DeLugg seems an unlikely bandleader for The Bay Bops’ careening 1958 Coral debut single Follow The Rock (written by successful black songsmiths Billy Dawn Smith and Luther Dixon), but his squeeze box was nowhere in sight. Zipfel was one of three composers on the upbeat flip, Joanie. Danny split soon thereafter (he recorded Hey Hey Girl [The Dip Dip Song] for M-G-M in 1964 as Danny Zip). Coral issued the remaining two Bay Bops masters in mid-’58: a group-generated jump, To The Party, and the dreamy ballad My Darling, My Sweet.
