Joe Steen

The late Charles K. Wolfe reported that Steen was from Kentucky, which accords with his 1934 recording Kentucky, My Home. A 21-year-old man of that name was enumerated in the 1930 census, then resident in Barren County, in west central Kentucky, and working in a veneer mill. (Tony Russell)

Gennett artist Joe Steen did his best to duplicate Jimmie Rodgers' recording of Ben Dewberry's Final Run, the railroad tragedy written by Georgia's topical songwriter Reverend Andrew Jenkins. Rodgers had changed Jenkins' references to local railroad lines with ones with which he was familiar and Steen followed suit, faithfully repeating Rodgers' lyrics the best he could and even trying to copy Rodgers' guitar solo, note for note. Steen, however, apparently didn't understand Rodgers' reference to the 'A&V' (which stood for the Alabama & Vicksburg, a minor branch line), calling it the 'A&B' instead.
