King Oliver

New Orleans jazz pioneer King Oliver (1885-1938) was on the downhill side of his recording career when he included this curious choice in a Victor session on the next-to-the-last-day of 1929. Evidently, either Oliver or someone else at the session got a hold of Jimmie Rodgers' pairing of Everybody Does It In Hawaii b/w Frankie & Johnny (Vi 22143) because Oliver recorded both songs at that session. Oliver's recording was highlighted by the idiosyncratic Hawaiian steel guitar of Roy Smeck, who was often billed as the 'Wizard of the Strings.' Smeck was noted for his highly florid improvisations, but his appearance on a King Oliver record was probably difficult for many jazz fans of the day to accept. As with the other Rodgers records covered by Victor dance bands, this one, too, was instrumental.
