Scotty Moore (lead-guitar) and D.J. Fontana (drums) were studio musicians at Memphis Recording Service, the Sun Records Studio, 706 Union Ave., Memphis, Tennessee, in the mid-1950s.
Scotty Moore
Scotty Moore was born as Winfield Scott Moore III. on 27 December 1931 in a farmhous between the villages Gadsden and Humboldt, Tennessee, and died at the age of 84 on 28 June 2016 in Nashville, Tennessee.
D.J. Fontana
D.J. Fontana, full name Dominic Joseph Fontana, was born on 15 March 1931 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Shreveport was famous at that time for the legendary 'Louisiana Hayride' shows, aired every saturday evening on radio. Fontana was the drummer of the Hayride house band and it was there where he met Scotty Moore, bassist Bill Black and of course young Elvis Presley in October of 1954.
The Blue Moon Boys
Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana played shows along with Bill Black and Elvis under the logo Elvis Presley & The Blue Moon Boys. And they stayed as the legendary back-up band of Elvis Presley until he was drafted for military service in 1958. Scotty Moore had started playing together with bassist Bill Black as early as 1952 when they founded The Starlite Wranglers until they began with The Blue Moon Boys in '54 joined in by D.J. Fontana later that year.
Memphis
When Elvis was in charge with the U.S. Army, Scotty Moore continued to work as a session guitarist and made several recordings under his own rights. He also worked as a producer and engineer mostly for the Fernwood label in Memphis.
Movie and television
Moore and Fontana continued to work together with Elvis Presley throughout the decade of the 1960s, especially on film soundtracks of Presley movies. They also took part in the spectacular '1968 Comeback TV Special', in the so-called 'Sit down'-shows. Those shows were way ahead of its times as they count as the first successful 'Unplugged Sessions' ever.
Post-Elvis times
During the 1970s and 80s, Moore and Fontana had worked for several famous musicians, such as Carl Perkins, Charlie Feathers, Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Ron Wood and Keith Richards. Even Pop music artists like Chris Isaak used the musical skills of the two legends for his albums. The 1990s saw Moore and Fontana often on tour with another legend from the Sun Records catalogue, Sonny Burgess, and of course they were seen at numerous Elvis Presley tribute shows. In 1997 Moore and Fontana issued the album 'All The King's Men' with various famous guest musicians out of the wide field of Rock and Pop music.
