Howard Keesee
Howard Keesee (1906-1982) was born and raised in Bristol, Virginia. From the late 1920s through the '30s he was active as an entertainer in Ohio, where many families from east Tennessee and Virginia moved to work; by 1938 he was locally famous enough to headline at theatres with his 'National Barn Dance Gang'. In later life he returned to Bristol, where he died. (Tony Russell)
Like Harry Hillard, Howard Keesee typified many recording artists of the late 1920s and early '30s who started careers by copying Jimmie Rodgers records but didn't get much further. Keesee recorded for Gennett for nearly three years, covering many Rodgers songs, including this version of a sentimental tribute to the South. There is nothing particularly singular about Keesee's style; what is telling about it is how ordinary it is, which indicates the pervasiveness of Jimmie Rodgers' influence during this period. For each performer who sang his songs on record before World War II, there were probably a thousand who never got a chance to make records at all.
