George Hall

For eight years, from 1931 to 1938, George Hall led the house orchestra at New York's Taft Hotel, ironically, the building where Jimmie Rodgers died on May 24, 1933. He formed his first band, the Arcadians, in the mid-1920s. When he began playing at the Taft, he adopted the song Love Letters In The Sand as his theme song. Hall's beautiful ensemble sound was perfect for hotel orchestra audiences, which were extremely popular during the Depression. The One Rose was written by Lani McIntire and became a big hit during this period, especially after the likes of Guy Lombardo and Bing Crosby recorded it. The vocalist on Hall's recording is Johnny McKeever.
