Tam Duffill had one golden shot at recording immortality in 1962 and made the most of it, recording Cooly Dooly for RCA’s Groove subsidiary under the watchful eye of New York producer Ray Ellis, who had arranged and conducted for everyone from The Four Lads and Connie Francis to Clyde McPhatter and Billie Holiday. Born November 22, 1940, Tamson Duffill was born in Bremerton, Washington but grew up in Virginia and then arrived in Fairhope, Alabama when he was 16. Purchasing his first guitar at age 12, Duffill cited Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams as early influences before the Sun rockabilly of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis made its mark on his ongoing development.
Cooly Dooly was a splendid self-penned rocker boasting a delightfully animated vocal from Duffill and tasty lead guitar. Tam earned extra points on the hip scale for covering New Orleans R&B singer Prince La La’s ’61 A.F.O. single She Put The Hurt On Me (as You Put The Hurt On Me) for a B-side. Duffill moved into folk music during the ‘60s, crooning solo versions of Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot songs during several decades on the Atlanta circuit. He died January 2, 2014 in Marietta, Georgia.
