Andrea debuted on Epic in early ’61 with Young And Lonely before the label issued her ode to gabby lifeguards as her encore. After a couple more Epic platters, Carroll moved to New York’s Bigtop logo and had her only hit, It Hurts To Be Sixteen, in 1963 (it was produced by The Tokens; The Chiffons sang background). A handful of mid-‘60s 45s for RCA Victor and United Artists completed Carroll’s recording career.
Andrea couldn’t equal the longevity of The Andrews Sisters. LaVerne, Maxene, and Patty Andrews were a wartime sensation, selling an estimated 90 million records during their fabulous career. The siblings developed their patented close harmony blend in Mound, Minnesota, influenced by The Boswell Sisters. The trio nailed their first pop chart-topper, Bei Mir Bist Du Schon (Means That You’re Grand), for Decca in 1937 and never looked back, capturing the hearts of a generation with their smashes Beer Barrel Polka (Roll Out The Barrel) (1939), Beat Me Daddy, Eight To A Bar (1940), Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (1941), Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me) (1942), Rum And Coca Cola (1945), and plenty more, including several huge-selling duets with Bing Crosby.
The threesome’s zesty Latin-spiced Her Bathing Suit Never Got Wet, penned by Nat Simon and Charlie Tobias, was tucked on the back of one of their few 1946 non-charters, Avocado (their longtime orchestra leader Vic Schoen wielded the baton). Patty launched a solo career in 1953 while Maxene and LaVerne persevered as a duo. By the time they reunited in ‘56, rock and roll had taken over, and their output for Capitol and Dot didn’t wield the same potency.
