Donny Hathaway

Donny Hathaway est né à Chicago le 10 janvier 1945 et a grandi à St Louis, où il a acquis des bases musicales dans le domaine du gospel - sa grand-mère était une interprète de musique sacrée. Il a obtenu une bourse d'études à l'Université Howard, à Washington, où il a étudié le piano et l'enseignement de la musique avant de se spécialiser en théorie musicale. Pendant son séjour à Washington, il a joué et chanté à l'église avant de se joindre à un trio de jazz'cocktail', puis a rencontré Curtis Mayfield qui l'a invité à Chicago en tant que producteur pour son label Curtom pour lequel il a également enregistré avec June Conquest sous les noms de June Conquest et Donnie. La pression du travail l'a forcé à quitter Curtom, et Donny a signé avec Chess en tant que musicien/producteur, mais aussi en tant que freelance avec Uni, Kapp et Stax avant de créer sa propre société de production indépendante.

Il a rencontré King Curtis, qui lui a fait connaître Atlantic Records, où il a signé en tant qu'interprète, auteur et producteur, et a connu le succès en tant que tel - par exemple'The Ghetto' (1970) et'I Love You More Than You'll Ever'll Ever Know' (1972) - et avec Roberta Flack - le plus grand succès avec'Where Is The Love', un des cinq meilleurs disques en Amérique en 1972.
