Bien que peu connu aux États-Unis, le chanteur country, auteur-compositeur, guitariste et yodleur Wilf Carter continue d'être vénéré dans son pays natal avec Hank Snow, le parrain de la musique country canadienne. Wilf Carter a écrit des centaines de chansons, depuis les ballades country et western jusqu'aux chansons folkloriques, en passant par les bums et cowboys, dont la plupart n'ont été enregistrés qu'avec sa guitare acoustique et dont beaucoup ont été interrompus par son habile yodel.
Ses pages ont été publiées au Canada sous son propre nom, mais aux États-Unis, il a été reconnu comme Montana Slim, un nom qu'il a également adopté. Cette vaste boîte à quatre disques de 104 pistes a mesuré ses premières années, de 1933 à 1941, après quoi, bien qu'elle soit demeurée très populaire au Canada, ses ventes aux États-Unis ont commencé à décliner.

Wilf Carter, également connu aux États-Unis sous le nom de Montana Slim, a été la première grande vedette country canadienne, même s'il n'avait jamais figuré dans les palmarès nationaux. Carter a été fortement influencé par la musique de Jimmie Rodgers et a toujours utilisé avec succès l'image du cow-boy. Wilf Carter a commencé sa carrière au début des années 1930 à la station de radio CF CN à Calgary et, peu de temps après, il a accepté une offre du réseau CBS. Il enregistre son premier disque en décembre 1933 aux studios RCA à Montréal. Au fil des ans, Wilf Carter a écrit plus de 500 chansons et enregistré d'innombrables disques. Son père était, comme il l'a récemment expliqué dans une interview, né en Suisse."

Le chanteur de country canadien Wilf Carter (1904-1996) a peut-être lancé sa carrière d'enregistrement la même année où Jimmie Rodgers est décédé. Carter avait peu d'affinités musicales avec les Blue Yodels de Rodgers, préférant ses ballades, ses chansons occidentales et ses chansons pop. En tant que jodleur, Carter a penché vers les styles suisses conventionnels, une technique qu'il a probablement appris des disques et des vaudevilliens passant par sa Nouvelle-Écosse natale. Bien qu'on l'appelle Wilf Carter dans son Canada natal, le public américain le connaissait sous le nom de Montana Slim, un surnom qui s'est maintenu lorsque l'annonceur Bert Parks a oublié son nom lors d'une émission radiophonique de CBS. Carter a enregistré sa première reprise de Rodgers, Roll Along Kentucky Moon, lors d'une session Bluebird de 1939 à New York.
