Omnivore Recordings s'est frayé un chemin à travers le catalogue sauvagement sous-estimé de l'Uncle Walt's Band en publiant Anthology : Those Boys From Carolina, They Sure Enough Could Sing..., le premier aperçu complet de carrière pour réintroduire le groupe, puis le premier album éponyme, avec huit titres bonus. Omnivore fait maintenant un petit détour pour célébrer le 25e anniversaire de Thinkin' Problem, le premier album solo de David Ball, ancien élève d'Uncle Walt.
Ball avait grandi en Caroline du Sud et s'était joint à Walter Hyatt et Champ Hood, membres du groupe Uncle Walt's Band, pour déménager à Austin, au Texas, dans l'espoir d'obtenir un contrat d'enregistrement et une plus grande visibilité au-delà du succès régional qu'ils avaient connu. Cette percée ne devait pas se produire. Après la sortie de trois albums, le groupe se sépare en 1983 et les membres individuels s'orientent vers une carrière solo.
David Ball a déménagé à Nashville où il a passé la plupart des années 80 à la recherche d'un tube comme il l'avait fait avec ses partenaires dans Uncle Walt's Band. Après trois singles pour RCA n'a pas réussi à allumer une étincelle, il est passé à Warner Bros. et 1994's Thinkin' Problem a été le résultat. La chanson-titre était le single principal et s'est classée au deuxième rang des Billboard Country Music Charts et au 40e rang du Billboard Hot 100.
D'autres singles à succès ont suivi, "When The Thought Of You Catches Up With Me" "Look What Followed Me Home", "What What Do You Want With His Love" et "Honky Tonk Healin'", menant finalement l'album au statut de double platine et à une nomination aux Grammy® Vocalist of the Year l'an suivant. Deux autres albums pour Warner Bros. #followed, ainsi que des albums pour Dualtone, Wildcatter, Shanachie et E1.
Aujourd'hui encore, David Ball est sur la route à travers le pays, poussant artistiquement en avant à chaque tournant, mais maintenant prêt à jeter un coup d'oeil en arrière à Thinkin' Problem pour son 25ème Anniversaire. La réédition est entièrement remasterisée et comporte sept titres inédits. En 1993, une démo de "Give Me Back My Heart" accompagne un nouvel enregistrement en 2019 de "What Do You Want With This Love" et cinq autres nouveaux enregistrements.
De plus, le livret contient des photos anciennes et des remarques du producteur original, Blake Chancey, Kix Brooks, The Bellamy Brothers, Terri Clark et plus encore, ainsi que les commentaires piste par piste de David. Ce n'est pas un problème de penser que de célébrer les 25 ans de ce grand album.

Riding With Private Malone
David Ball
David Ball, a Rock Hill, South Carolina native, was born on July 9, 1953. He showed early signs of a career in music when he performed a self-written tune for a junior high talent show. In high school he played upright bass and began performing at bluegrass and country festivals. Following graduation he played professionally in a trio called Uncle Walt's Band.
Ball moved to Nashville in the late '80s. Three singles on RCA, languished in the middle of the Country Chart. A move to Warner Bros. in 1993 led to a platinum album, 'Thinkin' Problem' and a title-track single that charted for 5 months and peaked at #2. Nine singles later Ball would again reach #2 [Country] with Riding With Private Malone.
The song invokes the war in a unique way. Prior to entering the service in 1966, Andrew Malone owned a new, red Corvette. Before he shipped out to Vietnam he left a note in the car's glove compartment saying, "If you're reading this, then I didn't make it home." The Corvette's new owner also reads that though the car is now his, he'll "always be Riding With Private Malone." Later, when he crashes the car, someone tells him they though they saw a soldier pull him out of the burning wreck.
In 2004 Private Malone… received a BMI award for having a million airplays on radio and TV. The song was co-written by Wood Newton, a Nashville songwriter with previous credits such as Bobbie Sue, a #1 hit for The Oakridge Boys and Twenty Years Ago, a #2 song for Kenny Rogers. Newton and Ball collaborated on 'Freewheeler,' a 2004 album, but were unable to duplicate their success.
